Larry Hannon - Harmonious Horsemanship

CLINICS

It has been asked, at times, “who I apprenticed under”, as it seems one must be certified by a ‘Professional Clinician/Horseman’ these days.  I have to preface this explanation by saying I was starting colts for the ranch remuda before most of today’s trainers/clinicians were a twinkle in their daddy’s eye.

There were four men in my early, formative years that watched and waited while quietly teaching me the ways of the horse.  Not one of these men was world famous for his horsemanship.  Each one was a working cowboy from the ‘30’s, ‘40’s, ‘50’s and 60’s, and except for my old daddy, I have no way of knowing how or who they learned from.  However, you need to realize these men lived in an age before mechanization and the technology of today.  When they left home every morning, they were horseback.  All day, every day they forked a saddle and stayed there.

All of these horsemen are gone from this earth, but I like to think their spirits still abide with me.  There are numerous other horsemen I have had the privilege of meeting and learning from through the years.  Men and women such as R.B. Warren, Jack Kyle, Billy Allen, Jay and Jeana Henson, Mary Ann Willoughby, Marilyn Peterson, Manuel Gallegos, and Jim Williams.

So, after thinking about it, I guess you can say I have apprenticed under all of these people.

HORSEMANSHIP SCHOOLS

Schools consist of 2-3 days of intense, hands on experience, whether it is with a yearling or an older horse.  Larry can take you and your partner to a higher plain than you have ever experienced before.

This is ‘Up Close & Personal’ instruction with you and your horse in the round pen/arena, and out in the open country.  It is about developing your sense of timing on the ground, and making the transition to when you are horseback.  It is about getting inside your mind, and in turn you get inside your horse’s head.

In order to complete these lessons, and insure that each student receives the personal attention she/he deserves, each school is limited to a maximum of 6 riders.  Follow-up sessions are available on an individual basis.

Follow-up instruction may be conducted at your place with a one on one instruction.  This works especially well if you have friends who would like to audit the instructional work, or if you have other horses you would like to work with.

This is, quite simply, good, honest horsemanship from a man who has spent a lifetime studying horses and starting colts.

These are principles passed down from his father, so watch closely, listen carefully and Larry will teach you the NATURAL WAY of the horse.

CLASS SCHEDULE

DAY 1

              *  A presentation covering the                 Elemental Types of Equine Personality                      and Temperament

  • Begin with demonstration of effective groundwork in the round pen.
  • Following the evaluation process, each student will be given personal instruction on effective use of the round pen, and the effective horsemanship techniques of proper groundwork.
  • This first day is very intense and time consuming, but is well worth it.  You will be amazed at what you have learned about yourself and the horse.

“FOR THE HORSE TO RESPOND CORRECTLY,

THE HUMAN MUST MAKE SOME CHANGES”.

DAY 2:

  • Moving to a larger pen or arena to cover basic horsemanship.  Including the proper seat, balance, use of legs, use of light hands, and developing the proper timing.  Doing the right things the right way to obtain the best performance from both horse and rider.  Pretty is as pretty does.

  • The use of proper equipment for you and your horse.  Be it a young horse in a jaquima, or a bridle horse, it’s what works best for your horse and you.

  • Incorporating the horsemanship principles you have learned into developing a good, solid stop, completing a roll back, doing a spin, doing a turn on the forehand, side passing, and two tracking.

“THE HUMAN MUST EARN THE HORSE’S TRUST; THEREBY BUILDING THE HORSE’S FAITH IN THE HUMAN.”

  DAY 3

  • Taking you and your horse outside of the arena for a relaxed, unhindered ride in the wide open spaces.  Allowing you and your horse to clear your minds and enjoy yourselves.  You will learn to incorporate techniques you learned the past 2 days in this leisurely ride without you or your horse even realizing it is still training.

“PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE HORSE PROBLEMS; HORSES HAVE PEOPLE PROBLEMS”
